The labyrinthine discography of the Baschet Brothers with Jacques Lasry

Updated: 24 Aug 2016

This is a perhaps vain attempt to gather together information on the many and varied recordings of the Structures Sonores, which has been rather messily done so far, not helped by the variety of names used by the artistes, and the habit of some of their record labels to reissue material in a fairly random manner and use the same title - or no title at all - for many releases, whether original or re-issue. I own perhaps a handful of these records, so cannot claim 100% accuracy, and I would welcome any corrections or additions to darrg at colander dot org - I have made what I can of the slightly confusing discographies given on the 'official' Baschet web-site and in François Baschet's rather badly edited and proofed 1999 book 'Les Sculptures Sonores, The Sound Sculptures of Bernard and François Baschet', along with using other web resources such as Discogs and sales/auction sites.

On names - The Baschet Brothers, Bernard (an engineer, 1917-2015) and François (a sculptor, 1920-2015), were the instrument makers and performers with François sometimes contributing compositions for their sound sculptures. Jacques Lasry (1918-2014) was the main composer, and performed & recorded with the Baschets and his wife Yvonne (and sometimes their son Teddy) as (most frequently) 'Structures Sonores Lasry-Baschet'. Structures Sonores (or Les Structures Sonores) describes the instruments themselves rather than being a group name, not that this has stopped it being used as such! Jacques Lasry seems to have given up work with the Baschets after converting to Judaism in 1968, but subsequent recordings still use the Lasry-Baschet name, and the family Lasry recorded the CD 'L'Orgue du Cristal' in 1992 without the Baschets.

In the true spirit of Lasry-Baschet scholarship this is a welcome but unhelpfully-curated release of lo-fi recordings made off-air from the BBC's Monitor TV series on 3rd July 1963. No track listing is given on the CD digipak so the descriptions above are my own. Some of the tracks appear to be out of order with the introductions. Most of the unidentified pieces likely can be indentified, I just haven't sat down to attempt it yet!

2. Compilations of previously-issued material:

Occasions - as the title suggests - where a selection of previously-issued Lasry-Baschet tracks have been collected together.

4. Film, TV and Radio work

This is unlikely to be anywhere near complete, as I have very little information on TV or radio appearances beyond those on the BBC in the UK.

Film Soundtracks

A Dream of Wild Horses (dir. Denys Columb de Daunant, c1960)

Baschet: The Transfiguration of Daily Life (dir. Eric Marin, 2003)

Jacques Lasry & François Baschet were music supervisors on Jean Cocteau's 'Testament d'Orphée' (1960)

Jacques Lasry has the following solo credits, but it is not clear how many - if any - involve the Baschet instruments:

Mars et Neptune (1957)

Le Foulard de Smyrne (1958)

The Head (1959)

The Spy Catcher (1960)

Le Ciel et la Boue (1961)

Le Roi du Village (1963)

No Temas a la Ley (1963)

Elle est à Tuer (1964)

TV & Radio appearances

13 Jan 1961 - Une Musique Nouvelle (RTF - FR) - this short film can be seen on the INA web-site: http://www.ina.fr/video/CPF08009464/une-musique-nouvelle-video.html

? Dec 1962 - Monitor (BBC TV - UK) - part of arts magazine series, either 9 or 23 December.

20 Jan 1963 - The Ed Sullivan Show (CBS TV - US) - as 'Lasry-Baschet's New Sounds' (or 'Lasserie-Bachet' in some sources) they are said to perform 'Gypsy', 'Alexander's Ragtime Band' and 'Carousel', the last of these with the Hugh Lambert Dancers. Baschet notes that the group had three bookings on this show, but I have only found dates for two.

3 Jul 1963 - Monitor (BBC TV - UK) - complete episode of this arts magazine series dedicated to LSS (see CD 'Baschet Radio').

17 Nov 1963 - The Ed Sullivan Show (CBS TV - US) - as 'The New Sounds'.

18 Mar 1965 - Gala Performance (BBC1 TV - UK) - part of concert introduced by Yehudi Menuhin.

22 Apr 1966 - Gala Performance (BBC1 TV - UK) - part of concert introduced by Michael Flanders.

5 May 1967 - This Week - The Arts: Structures-Sonores (ITV - UK) - nothing else known about this episode of a long-running documentary series. Perhaps has no involvement from Lasry-Baschet at all, beyond the title?

9 May 1970 - Whatever Next? (BBC1 TV - UK) - part of late-night magazine series. 'Les Structures Sonores' are credited on three shows in the listings magazine Radio Times,  but may have appeared in more.

16 May 1970 - Whatever Next? (BBC1 TV - UK) - part of late-night magazine series.

30 May 1970 - Whatever Next? (BBC1 TV - UK) - part of late-night magazine series.

5 Jan 1972 - Sounds of Music  - The Royal Institution London Annual Christmas Lectures to Young People - no.4: Craftsmanship and Technology,  by Prof. Charles Taylor (BBC2 TV - UK) - unclear if the Baschets appear or are merely discussed.

26 Jul 1983 - Kaleidoscope (BBC Radio 4 - UK) - includes profile and review of the Baschet's 1983 London exhibition.

Incidental music

Lasry's 'Teddy Blues' (a library cue seemingly related to 'Mister Blues') was used as incidental music in the Twilight Zone episode 'Third from the Sun' (8 Jan 1960).

In the UK, 'Manège' was used as the theme for the ITV schools series Picture Box between 1969 and 1990.

In 1965, several tracks were used as incidental music in the following serials from the BBC TV adventure series Doctor Who:

The Web Planet - Rapsodie de Budapest / Moelle de Lion / Pieces Nouvelles / Sonatine / Marche / Suite / Spontanéité / Quatuor Pour Trois.

The Space Museum - Jeux d'Ombres.

Galaxy Four -  Sonatine / Mister Blues / Rapsodie de Budapest / Pieces Nouvelles / Marche / Suite / Spontanéité / Moelle de Lion / Altitude 10.000 / Toccata Toccarde.

The Lasry-Baschet group had been the producer's original choice to record the Doctor Who theme tune, but eventually that honour went to Delia Derbyshire at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

5. Backing for vocalists and narrative works:

A lesser known but quite busy aspect of the Baschet discography from the 1960s is their work as collaborators and backing musicians. They worked on recordings of the poet Jacques Doyen, the folksinger Sarah Gorby and the singer Gurd Joglou, as well as providing incidental and background music for an array of recordings of children's stories and adventures.

Children's story in two parts performed by Amandine with Lasry-Baschet backing.

196? - LP - Peau d'Ane (Riviera 521001)

Children's story in two parts performed by Muse Dalbray with Lasry-Baschet backing. This is number 1 in Riviera's 'Le Disque Enchanté' series.

196? - LP - Le Cheval Électronique (Riviera 521023)

Children's story in two parts performed by Muse Dalbray with Lasry-Baschet backing. This seems to have been re-issued as part of a double LP of children's stories (Arion ARN227201), with Le Belle au Bois Dormant, though it is possible that the later issue was a new recording.

Children's story in two parts performed by Yves Robert with Lasry-Baschet backing.
