BBC Radio 1 - In Concert programmes from 1972

Shows as listed by Radio Times - therefore not necessarily accurate if cancellations or last minute schedule changes occurred. The name given in brackets is that of the host.

There are big gaps in this list, which it may be possible to fill over time. At the moment, I only have half-decent coverage up to 1978. I then have the Xmas 1979 copy and one random issue from 1985 - so I have not bothered putting in the absent dates for these and intervening years. (Contact me via the Peel list if you have any updates, or want to sell me missing Radio Times from the 1970s ...)

From January 1972 to at least 1979 the shows went out at 6.30pm on Saturday evenings. This seems to have become 6.31 during 1979, presumably to incorporate a news bulletin. By 1985, it was 6.30 again. I'm not sure how long the series continued after 1985.

All shows are listed as being broadcast in stereo from Spring 1973, including repeat shows not listed as such before! Presumably they were originally broadcast on FM in mono and repeated in stereo as stereo coverage became more widespread. Also, in 1977 there were a few experimental 'Stereo & Quad' transmissions, marked 'Q' on the list. This information comes from Radio Times issues covering a number of different receiving regions, so it is likely that, as some regions got stereo and/or quad coverage before others, the appropriate regional Radio Times only listed stereo and/or quad broadcasts where they were likely to be received. If you see what I mean ...

Also in 1977 began the 'Sight and Sound In Concert' series which ran in the same slot on Radio One, with a simultaneous TV broadcast on BBC2 (marked 'S&S' on the list). This was usually a short run of programmes, after which the normal radio-only version of In Concert would return.

Sometimes it is not clear from the listing whether artists are performing together or independently: notably, Vinegar Joe and Hookfoot (15 Apr 72), Randy Newman and Mike Silver (20 Jul 74), Emmylou Harris and the Hot Band (14 Aug 76) and Stefan Grossman/John Renbourn/Davey Graham/Happy Traum (29 Jul 78).
